Day 1 – The North
Start your first day in London by taking the train to Hampstead station in the north of the city and meander down the High Street, stopping off for breakfast on the way and perhaps even sampling the famous La Creperie crepe stand. Walk (or take a bus) down Haverstock Hill and then turn right onto Adelaide Road, which will take you to Primrose Hill. Walk to the top of the hill for some of the most stunning panoramic views of the entire city. When you have taken plenty of photos walk down Primrose Hill, cross the Prince Albert Road and the Outer Circle and you will find yourself in Regents Park, home to Queen Mary’s Gardens and London Zoo, the oldest scientific zoo in the world and a fantastic place to visit if you (or your kids) like tigers. When you have seen all the animals, leave Regent’s Park via the northeast exit and head for Parkway, where you will find the Jewish Museum and plenty of places to stop for lunch, such as Sushi Waka.
After lunch, take Camden Road north until you reach an entry point to the Grand Union Towpath, which you can follow all the way to Angel. Once here, take a walk up past the shops and boutiques of Upper Street, stop for a cocktail at the House of Wolf or catch an afternoon performance at the Almeida Theatre. When evening falls, take a bus to Exmouth Market, just south of Islington and choose from any of the exciting restaurant options here, such as Caravan or Moro. On the way you will pass the famous Sadler’s Wells, which has a fascinating schedule of performances and is the ideal way to spend your first evening.
Day 2 – The South
To begin your second and final day in London, take the tube to Bond Street station and find breakfast at one of the cafes on South Molton Street, such as Toast. Here you can explore London’s famous shopping West End shopping district, including stores such as Selfridges and Fenwick, as well as numerous exclusive designer boutiques. Make your way west along Oxford Street if you want to spend the rest of the morning in Hyde Park, listening at Speaker’s Corner and boating on the Serpentine, or head south for Green Park. Whichever you choose, make sure that you are in the vicinity of Green Park when it comes to lunch and head for Nobu on Berkeley Street to try the famous Black Cod. If you’re looking for cheaper options there are plenty around Green Park tube station, including noodles, sandwiches and pizzas.
After lunch walk down through Green Park to Buckingham Palace, visit the Queen’s Gallery and then carry on down to Birdcage Walk and on to Whitehall. Here you will find the Banqueting House, the only remaining component of the Palace of Whitehall and a fascinating London palace. Continue down to the Victoria Embankment, where you can either pass the afternoon exploring Westminster Abbey, or cross over the River Thames and take a turn on the London Eye. In the evening make your way along the south bank of the river to the British Film Institute, the National Theatre and the Southbank Centre. There are restaurants galore here, such as Skylon in the Southbank Centre itself, which has stunning views. There are also plenty of bars for an evening drink and some of London’s best theatre, music and film all within easy reach – the ideal way to polish off your trip, whatever you are interested in.
